happiness and sanity//

In the novel The Thief and The Dogs, Said’s sanity depended on his daughter. His desire to seek revenge and anger stemmed from his daughter’s reaction when she saw him. If only Sana had reacted the way he wanted her to, Said probably wouldn’t end up insane and killing people. With that being said, Sana was basically his hope and his happiness after being released from prison. She was the first person Said wanted to see showing how much happiness it would bring him just by seeing her. Another person who affected Said’s downfall would be Rauf Ilwan. Said used to look up on him and he was basically idolized by him. Seeing how much he has changed after being in prison shocked and hurt him. This worsens his situation because it made him feel like he had no one to trust anymore. Also, considering that his ex-wife and ex-friend betrayed him, it limited his positive perspective in life. That was the main thing that affected his happiness and sanity in the first place. Another character in the...

characterization//

Said started back in fright, darting in again between the tombs while the barking grew louder. He pressed his back against a tomb and took out his gun, staring out into the darkness resignedly. There it was. The dogs had come at last and there was no hope left. The scoundrels were safe, if only for a while. His life had made its last utterance, saying that it had all been in vain. It was impossible to tell precisely where the barking came from; it was carried in on the air from all around. It was hopeless now to think of fleeing from the dark by running away into the dark. The scoundrels had indeed got away with it; his life was a proven failure. The barking and the commotion were very close now and soon, Said knew, all the malice and revengefulness he'd been running from would be breathed right into his face. He held his gun poised as the barking grew ever louder and closer. And suddenly there was blinding light over the whole area. He shut his eyes and crouched at the ...

stream of consciousness//

Stream of consciousness is defined as a literary style in which a character's thoughts, feelings, and reactions are depicted in a continuous flow uninterrupted by objective description or conventional dialogue. This enables the readers to have a deeper understanding as to how the character is feeling. This gives the readers a clearer perspective and a more straightforward self dialogue which allows the readers to see what the author is trying to put out. In the novel, The Thief and The Dogs this was integrated by the author Naguib Mahfouz through the development of the characterization of the main character, Said Mahran. The novel circled around the uprise and downfall of the main character and with the use of stream of consciousness, it allows the readers to keep up with the development of the character itself with the transparency of the thoughts and inner turmoils of the main character accordingly with the narration. In chapter one, Said says to himself “I swear to God, I hate ...

translation//

Translated texts or novels aren’t as “hyped”, as kids in our generation would say, compared to the usual English novels. This may be due to the fact that translated texts were never seen or put out in the society as the type of books people should read or be focusing on. If you look it up, translated novels aren’t given much recognition compared to other types of novels despite the number of amazing reviews and comments on some of them. Truth is, some people would prefer reading books they know they can relate to instead of books that would open up a new world and a new perspective on things they’ve never experienced which translated books does. In the article I read of Claudia Roth published in the New Yorker, translated books give a deeper insight as to what the people from the setting are experiencing which media chooses to ignore. Newspapers, news reports, tv ads, billboards, etc. do nothing but inform us about the situations and sometimes the information they put out are biased ba...

The Solution To Online ‘Harassment’ Is Simple: Women Should Log Off “Look, I know it’s not an ideal situation. In a perfect universe we would all be able to cooperate and coexist in the same environment, acting respectfully for each other’s views and the freedom of the land. But that just isn’t the world we live in mainly because of people like me.” says Milo “I believe that women are screwing up the internet for men by invading every space we have online by openly discussing their stance on feminism to grab more attention and victimize themselves (even though some of them were actually raped, abused and violated but whatever, right?) knowing that men are naturally boisterous, confrontational and delightfully autistic which is incredibly okay because this is how we were created to be hence why we are entitled to stalk, threaten, demean and scare women and they shouldn’t have the right to complain. ” “The internet can’t cope any more with such strenuous tension between the sex...

education//

I think David Foster Wallace’s theory on education basically says that education doesn’t only include academic knowledge but also having knowledge of reality and of the things around you.  One of the many things he said which struck me the most was “The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day. That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.” His whole speech talks about how we have the freedom to think and do what we want and with this freedom, we tend to just be in our own universe and we tend to just think about ourselves unconsciously. However, it shouldn’t be like that. This quote is saying that the best kind of freedom is having to think...

thesis 3//

The personal history or the background of a writer plays an important part in his/her texts. He/She derives the true meaning and the intended emotions of the text from it as it adds significance to the text as a whole. Moreover, the personal history of the writer can somewhat make it more relatable for the readers thus the text having more impact to them.

thesis statement 2//

Throughout the entirety of the novel, it demonstrates the vast majority of the stereotypes given to men and women. It exhibited the very cliche stereotype towards men and women regarding their roles in the society.  It profoundly influenced the whole Igbo culture and how they treated women. It contributed a lot with regards to the build up of the conflicts and basically the plot of the whole novel.

things fall apart thesis//

Thesis Statement : Secondary characters or “minor” characters, as I’d like to call it, are basically characters who are a bit less important than the major character and they often contribute to the development or downfall of the main character. Unlike the major character who stays all throughout the novel, a minor character may come and go. Secondary characters or “minor” characters, as I’d like to call it, are basically characters who are a bit less important than the major character. They often contribute to the development or downfall of the main character. Unlike the major character who stays all throughout the novel, a minor character may come and go. In the novel Things Fall Apart, I would say that there would probably be seven significant secondary characters in which Chinua Achebe decided to include in order for us to better understand the main character, Okonkwo and the whole book itself. These characters are Unoka, Nwoye, Ezinma, Ikemefuna and Obierika. The first...

okonkwo//

Image
I think Achebe’s way of characterizing Okonkwo is his method of putting an emphasis on the element of the novel of being tragic. One of the most important element of a tragic novel or play is having a tragic hero who has a tragic flaw which would lead him to a catastrophe or his own destruction. It also helps with the essence of leaving the audience or the readers in a catharsis which is another important element of a tragic novel. In addition to this, Okonkwo is considered to be a contradictory character and it shows how complex the Igbo people is trying to challenge the Western’s perception to Africans. His character also portrays the culture’s traditions, beliefs and views on things like colonization.

things fall apart//

“it's not difficult to identify with somebody like yourself, somebody next door who looks like you. What's more difficult is to identify with someone you don't see, who's very far away, who's a different color, who eats a different kind of food. When you begin to do that then literature is really performing its wonders.” I definitely agree with Chinua’s explanation of the effectivity of literature. Literature is basically one of our main source of knowledge. We learn stuff based on what we read and see. Literature expands our knowledge and idea about the world we live in. It’s easier for us to know about the things which we’re able to see and experience ourselves because we get to pick things up whilst we’re seeing them or doing it. However, not because we can’t experience some other stuff ourselves, doesn’t mean we don’t have any chances on understanding them. We may not be able to interact with the people from the other side of the world and we may not be abl...

foa reflection//

My Further Oral Activity was about how African Americans use Spoken Word Poetry as their medium or platform to protest. I chose two poems to discuss which were entitled “How we forget” by Loyce Gayo and “Black Privilege” by Crystal Valentine. Coming up with this topic wasn’t really hard for me because I have been watching spoken word videos by the youtube channel, Button Poetry, and I have noticed that quite a few of the poems being made were about the lives of the African Americans. So then I realized that they use spoken poetry as a platform for them to voice out their emotions. Through the process of choosing which poems to discuss, it didn’t take much time to find the best ones considering the allotted time given for the presentation. The first poem I discussed was quite a difficult poem to talk about line by line because it needed extra research for me to be able to fully understand what she meant. To be honest, it took me a while to research about some of the things the speaker h...

act 1//

Image
In act I of Coriolanus, this is where majority of the characters were introduced. The first scene reveals a lot about the citizen’s, Menenius’ and Coriolanus’ personalities. We can see here the difference between the relationship of the citizens to Menenius and Coriolanus. Menenius is known to be good with the citizens whilst Coriolanus isn’t. In this particular scene, we can say that it foreshadows how the citizens would react if ever Coriolanus fails or does something wrong. It also shows the state of Rome at that time and that is the patricians were treated better and they had more benefits compared to the plebians. Then, in scene II, this is where the character of Aufidius is introduced. This scene is set in a Volsconian city called Corioles, the place which Coriolanus will soon conquer in scene 8. Hence, the nickname. Moving on, scene 3 is where the triple V’s characters were introduced. Volumnia, Coriolanus’ mother, Virgilia, his wife and Valeria, his wife’s friend. This scene s...

To what extent should scientific knowledge be open to the public?

To what extent should scientific knowledge be open to the public? I believe that scientific knowledge and claims should always be open to public as it is where we get our ideas and knowledge about almost everything in this world from. Now, we can all agree on the fact that Science is objective. It has a huge role on how this world is right now. We wouldn’t be able to reach this state of development if it wasn’t because of Science. Our wide knowledge about how everything on this planet works is because of our freedom to learn the different branches of science.

preserving a language//

According to the article, linguists estimate that a language dies every 2 weeks. Out of the roughly 6,500 languages spoken as of today, up to half of these are already endangered or on the brink of extinction. Personally, I find this very shocking and sad. Language is considered as a unique part of a culture. This is one of the few elements which makes a culture different from the others. Nowadays, there's been a constant change in our culture. Thus, affecting the language. There are a lot of causes of language extinction and some of these are colonization, people's need to adapt in situations and pop culture or mass media. Personally, I think it's important to preserve local languages as it upholds the cultural and historical background of a culture and it represents its identity. Languages may evolve throughout a period of time but despite this, its true essence will always be there. Language will always be a part of the development of a culture. And by keeping a lang...

nivea ad//

This ad shows the intimacy of a couple. The ad is showing that men are more attracted to women with a smoother skin type and their product is effective with doing that. Hence, you should buy their product if you want men to be more attracted to you or if you want a more "intimate" type of relationship. This ad uses Ethos and a good evidence for that is the texts included in the picture. The line, "Repairs dryness for 24hr+ smoothness" is trying to convince the audience that their product is effective. The target audience of this ad are young adult or adult women.

McDonald's is known for making happy and cute advertisements and this particular ad shows both. I think the intended audience for this ad is everyone but more specifically those who buys food from fast food restaurants. Ethos: - The ad showed a variety of customers. There were customers from different age groups and I think this shows that anyone, despite their age or gender, will enjoy the food that they'll serve. - They also included the employees of the restaurant. They showed how they all worked together to serve the customers and this can convince the audience to buy from the restaurant because usually, customers would prefer to go to a restaurant with good service. Pathos: - The background music they chose was very upbeat and lively so I think the emotion they're trying to convey with this is happiness. - The whole ad also showed how everyone was smiling and having fun. So I'm guessing that it's trying to say that everyone who goes to McDonald's ar...
