The personal history or the background of a writer plays an important part in his/her texts. He/She derives the true meaning and the intended emotions of the text from it as it adds significance to the text as a whole. Moreover, the personal history of the writer can somewhat make it more relatable for the readers thus the text having more impact to them.

According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, certainty is the quality or state of being certain especially on the basis of evidence. It is a fact about which there is no doubt. But the thing is, is it ever possible to be absolutely certain about something? If we think about it, even the things we were taught from the beginning has it's own uncertainty. Also, the things we use to measure has uncertainties. Science itself even has uncertainties. So can we really be a hundred percent sure about something? I have heard lots of people saying that nothing has an absolute certainty because nothing is permanent in this world. That everything in nature is just temporary and has it's end. Said started back in fright, darting in again between the tombs while the barking grew louder. He pressed his back against a tomb and took out his gun, staring out into the darkness resignedly. There it was. The dogs had come at last and there was no hope left. The scoundrels were safe, if only for a while. His life had made its last utterance, saying that it had all been in vain. It was impossible to tell precisely where the barking came from; it was carried in on the air from all around. It was hopeless now to think of fleeing from the dark by running away into the dark. happiness and sanity//

In the novel The Thief and The Dogs, Said’s sanity depended on his daughter. His desire to seek revenge and anger stemmed from his daughter’s reaction when she saw him. If only Sana had reacted the way he wanted her to, Said probably wouldn’t end up insane and killing people. With that being said, Sana was basically his hope and his happiness after being released from prison. She was the first person Said wanted to see showing how much happiness it would bring him just by seeing her. Another person who affected Said’s downfall would be Rauf Ilwan. Said used to look up on him and he was basically idolized by him. Seeing how much he has changed after being in prison shocked and hurt him. This worsens his situation because it made him feel like he had no one to trust anymore. Also, considering that his ex-wife and ex-friend betrayed him, it limited his positive perspective in life.
