preserving a language//
According to the article, linguists estimate that a language dies every 2 weeks. Out of the roughly 6,500 languages spoken as of today, up to half of these are already endangered or on the brink of extinction. Personally, I find this very shocking and sad. Language is considered as a unique part of a culture. This is one of the few elements which makes a culture different from the others. Nowadays, there's been a constant change in our culture. Thus, affecting the language. There are a lot of causes of language extinction and some of these are colonization, people's need to adapt in situations and pop culture or mass media.
Personally, I think it's important to preserve local languages as it upholds the cultural and historical background of a culture and it represents its identity. Languages may evolve throughout a period of time but despite this, its true essence will always be there. Language will always be a part of the development of a culture. And by keeping a language alive, it shows how much we respect and appreciate our own cultures. We should show how proud we are of our own cultures and traditions and one way of showing this is by preserving our own language. Plus, if you think about it. Language leads to diversity. The more languages we have, the more diverse our world will be.
Yes Nicole! I definitely agree with your position regarding the correlation between language and culture. As one's native language is preserved, so is its culture; and maintaining such wide range of languages will implement cultural diversity within our world, making it that much more complex, unique, and fascinating.
