okonkwo//
I think Achebe’s way of characterizing Okonkwo is his method of putting an emphasis on the element of the novel of being tragic. One of the most important element of a tragic novel or play is having a tragic hero who has a tragic flaw which would lead him to a catastrophe or his own destruction. It also helps with the essence of leaving the audience or the readers in a catharsis which is another important element of a tragic novel. In addition to this, Okonkwo is considered to be a contradictory character and it shows how complex the Igbo people is trying to challenge the Western’s perception to Africans. His character also portrays the culture’s traditions, beliefs and views on things like colonization.
