foa reflection//

My Further Oral Activity was about how African Americans use Spoken Word Poetry as their medium or platform to protest. I chose two poems to discuss which were entitled “How we forget” by Loyce Gayo and “Black Privilege” by Crystal Valentine. Coming up with this topic wasn’t really hard for me because I have been watching spoken word videos by the youtube channel, Button Poetry, and I have noticed that quite a few of the poems being made were about the lives of the African Americans. So then I realized that they use spoken poetry as a platform for them to voice out their emotions. Through the process of choosing which poems to discuss, it didn’t take much time to find the best ones considering the allotted time given for the presentation. The first poem I discussed was quite a difficult poem to talk about line by line because it needed extra research for me to be able to fully understand what she meant. To be honest, it took me a while to research about some of the things the speaker has mentioned. For example, the relation of Mississippi to Sodom and Gomorrah. Also, it was quite difficult to understand some of the figures of speech that the speaker used. And again, some needed extra research for clarification. Moving on to the next poem I discussed which was “Black Privilege” by Crystal Valentine, this I would say was a lot easier than “How we forget”. This poem didn’t need as much research as I did on the previous poem. The speaker did use a lot of figures of speech and sarcasm which mainly needed common sense to understand. All in all, it was quite a struggle to figure out the meaning of some of the things the speakers have mentioned. Since I didn’t know much about the lives of the African Americans, this FOA helped me understand more about the situations they were facing before and they are facing right now. School wise, this FOA helped me improve my researching skills and my skills with evaluating texts with the use of my common sense. I think my presentation went well considering how long my presentation was. I did feel a lot less nervous compared to my first FOA because there were less people watching me this time.

Hello there earthling. My name is Nicole and I’m guessing you already know that because my name’s like everywhere in my blog. Ironically, I’m not used to people calling me by that name because back in the Philippines I had a lot of nicknames. The people from my previous school calls me Ikah, Iks, Chinita or Niknik. While my parents and relatives call me Nika which is like my OG nickname. My first and second name is Nicole Anne. I never really thought that there would be a meaning behind my name because I thought that my name’s very simple which is why I actually used to hate my name. So apparently, according to my mom, Nicole is a Greek baby name which means “People’s victory” while Anne is an English name which means “God’s grace”. My parents chose those names because according to them, since I was their first child it felt like they won in life when they had me and that they consider me as a gift from God.

I think David Foster Wallace’s theory on education basically says that education doesn’t only include academic knowledge but also having knowledge of reality and of the things around you.  One of the many things he said which struck me the most was “The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day. That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.” His whole speech talks about how we have the freedom to think and do what we want and with this freedom, we tend to just be in our own universe and we tend to just think about ourselves unconsciously.
