According to the article, linguists estimate that a language dies every 2 weeks. Out of the roughly 6,500 languages spoken as of today, up to half of these are already endangered or on the brink of extinction. Personally, I find this very shocking and sad. Language is considered as a unique part of a culture. This is one of the few elements which makes a culture different from the others. Nowadays, there's been a constant change in our culture. Thus, affecting the language. There are a lot of causes of language extinction and some of these are colonization, people's need to adapt in situations and pop culture or mass media. Personally, I think it's important to preserve local languages as it upholds the cultural and historical background of a culture and it represents its identity.
